Best Practices
Downloads over the open internet
In general, please avoid doing large (>100 GB) downloads from the SMCE OSS over the open internet (large downloads from your project’s own data stores, or from other data stores within the same AWS region are fine). The way the environment is configured, we pay $0.045 / GB for this, which is negligible for typical usage but can add up quickly for large downloads. If you need to move large volumes of data to/from an SMCE OSS environment, contact the SMCE support staff and we can help you do it in a much more cost-effective way. (For the experts: The cost driver here is the managed NAT Gateway, which regulates traffic between our AWS resources and the open internet. If you talk to resources directly via, e.g., the AWS S3 API or the AWS CLI, then you bypass the NAT Gateway and avoid those charges).
